Cash savings or investments? What’s your choice?

February 26, 2025

Kinnary Sitwala is one of Talis IFA’s financial planning and investment specialists, and she often needs to help people to understand and navigate their way around the world of investments.

She says, “It can feel a bit daunting when you first start to consider investing. If, like many of my clients, you’ve dabbled a bit, when markets are volatile it can be tempting to cut your losses and put everything back into cash. But that’s often the opposite of what you should do!

“I recently worked with a client where three generations were living together in the same house. There was plenty of cash, but no financial planning or investments. The grandparents wanted to know whether investing was worth the risk.

“In a case like this, I usually start by explaining about the diminishing purchasing power of money due to inflation. What your money can buy you today…will it buy you the same in 5, 10 or 20 years?

“That leads me on to being able to explain investments and pensions; how and why they are worth it, and what is involved. I understand it can be complicated to grasp at first, which is why I encourage questions (no question is stupid – ask them all!)

“With this family, for example, I could ask whether they would still be living together in a few years as the young grandchild grows up. What would they do if something happened to the parents or grandparents; how would that impact them? What level of planning can they put in place to support the younger generation?

“I always look at things from a long-term perspective. I’m aiming for your financial security in 10, 20 or 30 years, and helping the younger generation to become financially aware so that, while they might need to work hard, they can also work smart with their money.”

Kinnary’s key principles:

  • Take a long-term view of investments and don’t give in to knee-jerk reactions to a volatile market.
  • Start early and invest strategically, this will enable you to create a solid foundation for your future.
  • Take professional advice – It takes holistic planning to achieve the lifestyle you want, now and in future.
